“Hi, how are you?”

“Sorry” isn’t really an answer someone expects it is?  Not entirely my fault though, I could hear due to the volume in the atrium.

You might be wondering, “Speed mating?  What?”  Yes, I was the exact same when the lecturers, or what it a fellow classmate1?  Anyway it was decided that we, the second years made conversation/introduce ourselves to the first years.  What better way than speed mating?  We had the name tags and a separate label for facts about ourselves.

As couples, or groups of three, we had one and a half minutes to talk to each other.  I say talk but it felt as if I was shouting at the other person2.  To be honest I’m not a very good talker so if there’s silence I probably wouldn’t be the one to break it3.  I’m quite surprised my voice didn’t go hoarse of croaky as I’m not use to yelling but I suppose when I’m older and can speak my language with some fluidity, I’ll be conversing with fellow Cantonese/Hakka people as if we were arguing. :P

It was an interesting experience though.  I remember some things now but I guarantee it will be *whoosh* gone tomorrow.

Anyone else been through something similar?

  1. Caught the discussion mid way through.  Was making my way from the library. []
  2. Kind of resembling an ordinary Cantonese conversation. :P []
  3. I’m not particularly good with the socialising thing. []
