Homemade Solutions Descaling Kettle and Removing Rust Off Laminate Wooden Flooring

I’m always looking for ways to save money and use home made solutions to clean the house.  After much research online I have come across these solutions, which not only work but also make use of household ingredients1):

Cleaning the kettle (tested on a plastic and a metal kettle):

  1. Fill your kettle with equal parts water and vinegar, then add a teaspoon of salt (I’ve seen people clean without salt but I believe the grit of the salt will “sand down” the limescale)
  2. Turn on the kettle to boil
  3. Once boiled, empty out the solution of your kettle
  4. Rinse the kettle and it should be sparkly clean, if not then reapply the previous steps

Getting rust of laminate wooden flooring (the previous tenants covered the stain with the table ==):

  1. Grab an empty container (size of container will depend on the size of stain)
  2. Mix in water with bicarbonate soda (a.k.a baking soda).  It should come to a thick consistency, if not then add more bicarbonate soda
  3. Apply the mix of bicarbonate soda and water onto the rust and leave for about 45 minutes (you can leave it on a little longer for good measures)
  4. Get a tea towel/table cloth and use elbow grease to rub the rust of the floor
  5. It might take a couple of reapplication to remove the stain

If you have other suggestions or advice then feel free to leave a comment. :)

  1. Ergo, no more spending over £3 buying manufactured detergents. : []
